Understanding the ACT Essay

The ACT Essay, also known as the Writing test, is an optional component of the ACT. Here’s how to create a compelling ACT Essay:

 1. Understand the ACT Essay Prompt

The essay prompt presents a complex issue and three different perspectives on it. Your task is to analyze and evaluate the perspectives, state and develop your own perspective, and explain the relationship between your perspective and those given.

 2. Plan Your Essay

Before you start writing, take a few minutes to plan your essay. Determine your thesis statement, the main points you want to make, and the evidence you’ll use to support them.

 3. Develop a Strong Thesis

Your thesis statement should clearly express your perspective on the issue and how it relates to at least one of the perspectives provided in the prompt.

 4. Use Evidence and Examples

Support your arguments with concrete evidence and examples. They can be drawn from your personal experiences, historical events, literature, or current events.

 5. Maintain a Clear and Logical Structure

An effective ACT essay is well•organized. Each paragraph should serve a clear purpose, and your ideas should flow logically from one to the next.

 6. Practice Writing ACT Essays

Regular practice under timed conditions will help you get comfortable with the ACT Essay format and improve your writing speed and clarity.
